Paying full price on private prescriptions? Compare generic medicines with clear per-pill prices, understand the UK’s personal import rules and check what you can buy locally first.
Updated October 2026 by the MyRxBox team
The NHS covers most essential medicines, so why would anyone in the UK order from abroad? Usually because the medicine isn’t available on the NHS for them, or because a private prescription is expensive at a high-street pharmacy. Common examples include:
Most of the generic medicines we supply are made by licensed manufacturers in India and contain the same active ingredients as UK brands. Prices are shown in US dollars with a clear price per pill. Compare them in the medicine price index.
Understanding how you’re charged helps you decide whether ordering online makes sense:
| Route | What you pay | When it’s usually best |
|---|---|---|
| NHS prescription in England | A flat charge per item, unless you’re exempt; a prepayment certificate caps the cost for frequent users | Medicines your GP prescribes on the NHS |
| NHS prescription in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland | Free | Almost always the cheapest route |
| Private prescription at a UK pharmacy | The full price of the medicine plus a dispensing fee | When you need it quickly |
| Private prescription, ordered internationally | The listed price plus shipping; often lower for long-term generics | Stable, long-term medicines where you can plan ahead |
If a medicine is free or cheap on the NHS for you, that’s usually the best option. Ordering internationally is most useful for private prescriptions, larger packs and medicines that aren’t prescribed on the NHS. Our price comparison guide explains how to compare costs fairly, and 15 ways to lower medication costs covers every other option.
Here’s how the rules work in practice:
The MHRA, the UK’s medicines regulator, warns about fake medicines sold online and recommends using registered pharmacies. UK-based online pharmacies must be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and display its internet pharmacy logo. MyRxBox supplies from overseas, so we’re not a GPhC-registered UK pharmacy; we think you should know that before you decide. For a medicine-specific example, read buying ivermectin online in the USA, UK and Australia.
Before ordering anything, check whether a UK pharmacy can sell it to you directly after a short consultation. A few examples relevant to our range:

UK law doesn’t generally restrict importing medicines for your own or your household’s use, but there are limits: reasonable quantities (around three months’ supply), no controlled drugs by post, and no onward sale. Read the UK rules section.
We require a valid prescription for prescription-only medicines, and our team checks it before dispatch. Keeping your GP informed is also important for your safety.
No. GPhC registration applies to pharmacies operating in Great Britain. MyRxBox supplies medicines internationally from overseas.
Depending on the parcel’s value and how it’s shipped, import VAT or handling fees may apply.
Delivery times depend on shipping and customs. You’ll see an estimate at checkout and receive a tracking number when your order ships.
If the medicine is available to you on the NHS, especially free in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, that’s usually the best option. International ordering is most useful for private prescriptions.
