Who MyRxBox helps in Australia

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) keeps many medicines affordable in Australia. Costs climb quickly, though, when a medicine is not listed on the PBS, or when you’re prescribed it privately for a use the PBS doesn’t cover. That’s where Australians most often look overseas:

Most of the generic medicines we supply are made by licensed manufacturers in India. Prices are listed in US dollars with a clear per-pill price; compare them in our medicine price index.

The TGA Personal Importation Scheme explained

Australia has one of the clearest sets of rules for importing medicines for personal use. Under the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s Personal Importation Scheme:

RuleWhat it means for your order
Australian prescriptionIf a medicine is prescription-only (Schedule 4) in Australia, you must hold a valid Australian prescription or written authority when it’s imported.
3 months per orderEach order can contain no more than a 3-month supply at the maximum prescribed dose.
15 months per yearNo more than 15 months’ supply can be imported over any 12-month period.
You or immediate familyImports are for you or an immediate family member, and can’t be sold or supplied to anyone else.
No controlled substancesControlled substances can’t be imported under the scheme.

Orders that don’t meet these conditions can be seized by the Australian Border Force. If you need more than three months at once, an Australian-registered doctor can apply to the TGA under the Special Access Scheme. Medicines imported this way aren’t evaluated by the TGA, which is why checking every pack matters. We size our recommendations around these rules: keep each order within a 3-month supply, and send us your Australian prescription before dispatch.

PBS prices vs private prescriptions

Before ordering from overseas, check what you’d pay locally:

  • PBS-listed medicines on a PBS prescription have a capped co-payment, which is lower again for concession card holders. For these, a local pharmacy is usually the cheapest option.
  • Private (non-PBS) prescriptions are charged at the pharmacy’s full price. This is where international generics can save the most, especially on 3-month packs.
  • The PBS Safety Net lowers costs further once your family’s spending passes a yearly threshold, so keep track of your scripts.

To compare fairly, match the active ingredient, strength and quantity, then compare the total cost per month including shipping. Our price comparison method walks through it, and brand vs generic medicines explains why generic prices are lower.

Prescription-only, pharmacist-only and over the counter

Australia sorts medicines into schedules, which decides how you can get them:

  • Schedule 4 (prescription only): includes sildenafil, tadalafil, tretinoin, ivermectin tablets, levothyroxine, asthma preventers and most antibiotics. You need an Australian prescription to import these.
  • Schedule 3 (pharmacist only): available after a chat with a pharmacist.
  • Schedule 2 (pharmacy medicine) and unscheduled medicines are sold more freely.

Some common needs can be met locally without importing at all, for example threadworm treatments and many antihistamines. Look up any ingredient in our medicine glossary or use the medicine name decoder, and see does Tamiflu need a prescription? for a worked example of how status can vary between countries.

How ordering works from Australia

  1. Get a prescription from an Australian-registered doctor, in person or by telehealth.
  2. Choose your medicine and a pack that’s no more than a 3-month supply in our shop.
  3. Upload your Australian prescription through our secure form. Our team checks it before dispatch.
  4. Pay using the details we email you. Orders over $499 get 10% off with code BOX10 plus free shipping.
  5. Track your parcel. Keep a copy of your prescription in case Border Force asks for it, and reorder well before you run out. See how to refill a prescription.

Staying safe when importing medicines

The TGA notes that medicines bought from overseas may not meet Australian standards and can be counterfeit. To protect yourself:

  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist about any medicine you import, so they can check interactions.
  • Check each pack’s active ingredient, strength, manufacturer, batch number and expiry date. See how to read your prescription label.
  • Avoid sellers who don’t ask for a prescription for Schedule 4 medicines, or whose prices are far below everyone else’s.
  • Be wary of “natural” enhancement and weight-loss products. Read hidden sildenafil warnings and fake GLP-1 warning signs.

Our complete checklist is in 7 checks before you buy medicine online. Customers elsewhere can read our USA and UK guides.

Questions from Australian customers

TGA rules, quantities, prescriptions and delivery.

Still have a question? Contact our team.

Yes, under the TGA Personal Importation Scheme, if you hold a valid Australian prescription for Schedule 4 medicines, import no more than a 3-month supply per order (and 15 months in 12 months), and the medicine isn’t a controlled substance.

For medicines that are prescription-only in Australia, yes. The TGA requires a valid Australian prescription or written authority at the time of import.

No more than a 3-month supply at the maximum prescribed dose per order. For more, an Australian doctor can apply under the Special Access Scheme.

The Australian Border Force can seize it. That’s why we check prescriptions and quantities before dispatch.

For PBS-listed medicines on a PBS script, usually not. Savings are most likely for non-PBS or private prescriptions.

Delivery times depend on shipping and customs. You’ll see an estimate at checkout and a tracking number when your order ships.

The scheme allows imports for you or an immediate family member, with a valid prescription in their name.
