Estimates only, based on the prices you enter. Always compare the same active ingredient, strength and dosage form, and confirm any switch with your prescriber or pharmacist.
Medicine prices are hard to compare because pack sizes differ. The calculator turns every price into a cost per tablet or unit, then scales it to your real use:
| Must be the same | Can be different |
|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Colour, shape and size of the tablet |
| Strength (for example, 20 mg) | Inactive ingredients such as fillers and dyes |
| Dosage form (tablet, capsule, cream, eye drop) | Packaging and pack size |
| Route (by mouth, on the skin) | Brand name and manufacturer |
| Bioequivalence – same amount absorbed within strict limits | Price |
The FDA requires this for approved generics in the US, and regulators such as the MHRA in the UK and the TGA in Australia apply similar standards. The WHO builds its Model List of Essential Medicines around generic names for the same reason.

Some medicines have a narrow therapeutic index, meaning small changes in blood levels matter. Examples include levothyroxine, warfarin and some anti-epileptic drugs. You can still use generics, but stay on one consistent product where possible and ask your doctor to recheck levels about 6–8 weeks after any change. Combination products, extended-release forms and inhalers also need careful matching – check the exact strength and release type, not just the ingredient name.

It depends on the medicine and where you buy it. Savings are often largest for medicines whose patents have expired and that are made by many manufacturers. Enter your own quotes in the calculator for an accurate figure.
The active ingredient, strength, dosage form and route must match, and regulators require bioequivalence. Inactive ingredients, colour and shape can differ.
Generic makers do not repeat the original discovery research and large clinical trials, and competition between several manufacturers pushes prices down.
Different manufacturers make the same generic. Check the label shows the same active ingredient and strength, and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.

A branded generic, such as Cenforce or Eltroxin, is a generic version sold under the manufacturer’s own brand name. It contains the same active ingredient as the original brand.
