Quick answerBimatoprost 0.03% (the ingredient in Latisse) makes lashes grow gradually. Most people notice longer, fuller, darker lashes at around 8 weeks, and clinical trials measured the full effect at 16 weeks. It is applied once nightly to the upper lash line only, and lashes slowly return to how they were if you stop.

How bimatoprost grows eyelashes

Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analogue first developed to lower eye pressure in glaucoma. During clinical use, doctors noticed it also made eyelashes longer, thicker and darker. It is thought to lengthen the growth (anagen) phase of the lash cycle and increase the number of hairs growing at the same time. The 0.03% solution is FDA-approved as Latisse to treat hypotrichosis – inadequate or not enough eyelashes.

This tracker turns that timeline into dates. It counts the days from your start date, highlights your current phase, and shows when to expect the next milestone. The nightly log helps you stay consistent, which matters because results depend on applying it every evening.

Eyelash growth results week by week

WhenWhat usually happens
Weeks 1–4Little visible change for most people. Mild itching or redness of the eyelids can occur as you get used to it.
Weeks 4–8Gradual increase in length and darkness becomes noticeable for many people.
Weeks 8–16Fuller, longer and darker lashes continue to develop.
Week 16Full effect – the point at which clinical trials measured results.
After stoppingLashes gradually return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months.

How to apply bimatoprost to your lashes

  1. Wash your face and remove all make-up. Take out contact lenses.
  2. Place one drop on a new sterile applicator, holding the bottle upright.
  3. Draw the applicator along the skin at the base of the upper lashes, from the inner to the outer corner. It should feel lightly moist, not wet.
  4. Blot any excess beyond the lash line with a tissue.
  5. Throw away the applicator and use a fresh one for the other eye.
  6. Do not apply to the lower lash line – enough spreads there naturally when you blink.
  7. Wait 15 minutes before putting contact lenses back in.

If you miss a night, do not apply extra to catch up. Just apply as usual the next evening. Using it more than once a day does not grow lashes faster and increases side effects.

All three contain the same active ingredient at the same strength. If your product has no applicators, use sterile single-use eyeliner brushes and never share them. Some bimatoprost eye drops for glaucoma come in a lower 0.01% strength – check the label before using any product on your lashes.

Side effects of bimatoprost for eyelashes

  • Common: itchy eyes, eye redness, dry eyes, and darkening of the eyelid skin (usually reversible after stopping).
  • Iris colour change: increased brown pigment in the coloured part of the eye, which is likely permanent. It is more noticeable in people with mixed-colour eyes such as green-brown or blue-brown.
  • Unwanted hair growth where the liquid repeatedly touches skin outside the lash line.
  • Changes around the eye, such as a slightly sunken look, have been reported with long-term prostaglandin eye drops.
  • Seek medical help for eye pain, vision changes, eyelid swelling, discharge or signs of infection.

Who should be careful

Talk to an eye doctor first if you have glaucoma or raised eye pressure, use other eye drops, have eye inflammation (uveitis), have had eye surgery or a lens replacement, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. People using prostaglandin glaucoma drops such as latanoprost should not add bimatoprost for lashes without advice, because it may reduce the pressure-lowering effect.

Eyelash growth FAQs

How long does bimatoprost take to grow eyelashes?

Changes are gradual. Many people notice a difference at around 8 weeks, and full results were measured at 16 weeks in clinical trials.

Is Careprost the same as Latisse?

Both contain bimatoprost 0.03%. Latisse is the FDA-approved eyelash product and includes sterile applicators; Careprost is sold as eye drops. Ask your pharmacist how to apply drops safely to the lash line.

Can I apply it to my lower lashes?

No. The label directs application to the upper lash line only. Enough reaches the lower lashes naturally when you blink.

What if I miss a night?

Do not apply extra to catch up. Simply apply as usual the next evening.

Will applying it twice a day work faster?

No. Applying more often does not speed up growth and increases the risk of irritation and skin darkening.

What happens if I stop using it?

Lashes gradually return to how they looked before treatment, usually over several weeks to months.

Can bimatoprost change my eye colour?

It may cause increased brown pigmentation of the iris, which is likely permanent. Eyelid skin darkening is usually reversible after stopping.

Can I use it if I have glaucoma?

Only with your eye doctor’s approval. Bimatoprost lowers eye pressure and may interfere with other prostaglandin glaucoma drops.

Can I wear mascara while using it?

Yes. Apply bimatoprost at night to clean skin, and remove all make-up before each application.

Is my tracker data private?

Yes. Your start date and nightly log are stored only in your own browser. Use Clear saved data to delete them at any time.
